However, most parents don’t notice the signs of ARFID because their child doesn’t look sickly. ARFID or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder was previously referred to as “Selective Eating Disorder.” While ARFID is like anorexia in that it involves limitations on the amount or type of food consumed, it does not involve concern about body shape, size or weight. Children diagnosed with ARFID often have a co-occuring anxiety disorder as well. It’s important to note ARFID is not caused by lack of available food or refusing to partake in certain foods due to cultural traditions. It can be hard to distinguish from typical “picky eating,” but there are some signs that set ARFID apart. ARFID, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, is an eating disorder which affects many children and adults, it used to be called Selective Eating Disorder and is sometimes called extreme picky eating. Currently, ARFID clinical criteria makes psychosocial impairment optional, which is very odd indeed, as the ability to manage more than a very limited dietary variety often has negative implications for social eating occasions.
